December Revolutionary Member Spotlight – Dr. Michael Hynes

Monthly we will be spotlighting a member of the Creative Revolution. This will offer us all a way to get to know each other better, inspire each other, and appreciate the work we are each doing offline.

This month’s member spotlight is on Dr. Michael Hynes (@michaelhynes), Superintendent of School in Port Washington, NY, USA. Additionally, he is a Fulbright Specialist and an associate professor of education and leadership at Long Island University and Stony Brook University. His mission is to spread the message of the importance of a holistic approach to educating children. He received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Bethany College and doctorate in educational administration from Dowling College.

We are so honored that Dr. Hynes is a member of this community, and so grateful for the work he does daily to impact students and educational outcomes. We hope you enjoy reading and are inspired by the answers to his spotlight survey.

Why did you join TCR?

I joined TCR because I not only believe in the mission, but believe education at its core is under attack by people who know very little to nothing about it. We need an educational revolution and creativity is a large part of it.

What’s your favorite part of being a member of TCR?

Learning from the other members. I enjoy the posts and articles. I am also enjoying Kate’s classes!

What is your current occupation?

Superintendent of Schools in NY

What do you love most about your industry?

The educators, families and students I serve every day.

How do you define success?

I define success by ensuring I’m better than I was the day before and grateful for the challenge in doing so.

Who inspires you?

My family and anyone who overcomes adversity and flourishes because  of it.

How do you connect with your creativity?

I love music. I play guitar and listen to music often. I also love to paint and write.

Favorite quote right now?

When you point your finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at you.

If you could choose anyone as a mentor, who would you choose and why?

I would choose Betty Rosa who is our New York State Commissioner of Education. She has served as a teacher, Superintendent of Schools, the Board of New York State Regents President and now Commissioner. She has so much knowledge to share for sure!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter your field?

To always make sure every single decision you make focuses on what is best for kids.

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — you learned in the last month?

How to raise baby chicks! We now have eight.

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I used to teach tennis to Anna Wintour who is the Editor in Chief of Vogue and  just completed an ultra marathon race of 105 miles and ran for 32 hours straight.

What’s the last book you read?

Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins.

What is your favorite hobby?

Playing tennis, running and working out in the gym.

If you had a different job, what would you choose?

Priest

What’s the next place on your travel bucket list?

England or Scotland

What’s one item you can’t live without?

Coffee!!!
